Diet and body size of North American mammal road mortalities
نویسندگان
چکیده
Previous studies suggest roadkill may not be evenly distributed among species or within species due to life history characteristics. We examine published data on mammalian roadkill surveys conducted in North America for a relationship between diet type, body size and roadkill frequency. Eight studies with comparable methods are used in the analysis for a combined survey mileage of 224,354 km that includes 3.101 individuals killed from 38 species. Carnivores were less likely to be found in roadkill surveys than omnivores or herbivores. After controlling for diet type, a peaked relationship was found between body size and roadkill frequency with the model predicting the highest roadkill for body sizes of about 1.06 kg. These results may be explained by both biological factors and sampling methods. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The role of local versus biogeographical processes in influencing diversity and body‐size variation in mammal assemblages
Our objective was to estimate and analyze the body-size distribution parameters of terrestrial mammal assemblages at different spatial scales, and to determine whether these parameters are controlled by local ecological processes or by larger-scale ones. Based on 93 local assemblages, plus the complete mammal assemblage from three continents (Africa, North, and South America), we estimated thre...
متن کاملCope's rule and the dynamics of body mass evolution in North American fossil mammals.
Body mass estimates for 1534 North American fossil mammal species show that new species are on average 9.1% larger than older species in the same genera. This within-lineage effect is not a sampling bias. It persists throughout the Cenozoic, accounting for the gradual overall increase in average mass (Cope's rule). The effect is stronger for larger mammals, being near zero for small mammals. Th...
متن کاملReproductive rate and body size predict road impacts on mammal abundance.
It has been hypothesized that mobile species should be more negatively affected by road mortality than less-mobile species because they interact with roads more often, and that species with lower reproductive rates and longer generation times should be more susceptible to road effects because they will be less able to rebound quickly from population declines. Taken together, these hypotheses su...

This experiment was conducted to study the effect of different levels of levamisole on performance and related parameters with immune system in Cobb 500 strain male broilers. The experiment was carried out a completely randomized design, with 300 male broiler chickens in four treatments and five replicates 15 birds/replicates. The experimental groups consisted of zero, 2.5, 5 and 7.5 mg pe...
متن کاملIs diet quality an overlooked mechanism for Bergmann's rule?
Bergmann's rule (body size increases with latitude) has long interested biologists; however, its mechanism remains unclear. An overlooked mechanism (latitudinal variation in plant quality) might help explain Bergmann's rule. We studied three herbivores. In the field, the planthopper Prokelisia and the sea hare Aplysia, but not the long-horned grasshopper Orchelimum, were larger at high latitude...
